International Women's Day: Progress & Empowerment

International Women's Day: Progress & Empowerment

Posted by Lynn Power on

We love International Women's Day. It's nice to have a day that gives us a reason to shout out other female founders. But did you know the origins of IWD? And that it's over 100 years old?

International Women's Day (IWD) is a global celebration of the achievements and contributions of women throughout history. It is a day to recognize the progress that has been made in the fight for gender equality and to acknowledge the challenges that still exist. The origins of International Women's Day can be traced back to the early 20th century and are rooted in the struggles of women for their rights and better working conditions.

The idea of an international day dedicated to women first emerged at the turn of the 20th century when the world was undergoing significant social and political changes. The early 1900s witnessed a surge in activism for women's rights, particularly in the industrialized nations where women were becoming more vocal about their demands for better working conditions, suffrage, and equality.

The first National Women's Day was organized by the Socialist movement in the United States on February 28, 1909. This event aimed to address the ongoing challenges women faced in the workplace and society at large. The concept gained momentum, and it wasn't long before the idea of an international day for women was born.

The first International Women's Conference took place in 1910 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Clara Zetkin, a prominent German socialist, proposed the idea of an International Women's Day to be celebrated on the same day in every country to advocate for their demands. The proposal was met with unanimous approval, and the first International Women's Day was celebrated on March 19, 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland.

In 1913, Russian women observed International Women's Day on March 8, demanding the right to vote and protest against World War I. This pivotal event marked the day's association with the fight for women's rights and peace.

Over the years, International Women's Day has evolved into a global movement that transcends borders, cultures, and languages. It is a day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women worldwide. The day also serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggles and challenges faced by women, including gender-based violence, discrimination, and unequal opportunities.

The theme for each International Women's Day varies, reflecting the current issues and priorities in the global fight for gender equality. From #EachforEqual to #ChooseToChallenge, these themes encourage individuals and communities to take action and contribute to creating a more inclusive and equitable world. The 2024 theme is #InspireInclusion, an appropriate theme as we are heading into another election year.

As we celebrate International Women's Day, it is important to recognize the progress that has been made and acknowledge that there is still work to be done. It is a day to honor the achievements of women, amplify their voices, and stand in solidarity with those fighting for a world where every woman can live free from discrimination and enjoy equal opportunities. International Women's Day is not just a celebration but a call to action – a reminder that the fight for gender equality is everyone's responsibility.
